Alvine Pharmaceuticals plans to become the leader in developing new drugs to treat celiac sprue and other immune related diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Alvine’s primary goal is to translate new knowledge about celiac sprue pathogenesis into innovative therapeutic products. These products will meet the unmet medical needs of the nearly one million (and rapidly growing) diagnosed patients in the US and Europe who suffer from this lifelong disease. Alvine’s lead program focuses on orally administered proteases to detoxify gluten. Alvine’s lead product candidate from this program, ALV001, contains a recombinant protease for oral administration to destroy gluten in the stomach before it can exert a toxic effect in the small intestine. Alvine plans to initiate human clinical studies of ALV001 in 2007, and to seek regulatory approval for the use of ALV001 by celiac sprue patients who exhibit ongoing signs of active disease in spite of their attempt to maintain a gluten-free diet.
