Go Digsby & Never Look Back. This "crowded" space needed a solid program and got it in digsby.

After playing with Pidgin, Trillian, Mranda, Digsby wins for the easiest multiprotocol IM.

Love it

And how many will love this when you have to pay $20 for it or see ads?

I'd pay $20. Any program worth it's salt is worth supporting such that you put your money where your mouth is. jakepease1 08/15/2008
I'd pay for Digsby! :) happyches 08/15/2008
Of course *you* would. Most people wouldn't, when you can get 90% of the IM features in an OSS application. The market for a paid IM client is small and shrinking. If Digsby went OSS and found a way to integrate search as a revenue stream (a la Firefox)... then maybe they could have a business. drmanhattan 08/15/2008
To be honest, I never use the Firefox search bar. And I never click on Google Ads. So I find it hard to understand how there are actually people clicking on them and earning companies money. jakepease1 08/15/2008
It doesn't matter if you use it. That's how Firefox makes money. Google pays them to integrate Google Search into their browser. drmanhattan 08/15/2008
Actually, according to several reports, Firefox makes money when searches are made, not just from integrating it with google tech. Google has to get searches before it will part with revenue. jakepease1 08/15/2008
If you love a program and intend to keep using it, something as trivial as $20 is nothing compared to the enjoyment of a solid program with a growing reputation for good. Besides, there are people out there who spend even more on things they use only once, so $20 for repeated uses is worth it. zathman 08/15/2008
@drmanhattan: Digsby apparently is making the attempt to find alternate ways through link ads (like the amazon one) to make profits..why would they do this and charge for the app? You deal with ads everywhere else. Its a fact of our money driven world. Get over it. aithne 08/15/2008
On another note, regardless of how things work out in the end, the dotSyntax guys have pledged that there will always be a free version. zathman 08/15/2008
On principle, I do not pay for something I can get for free. I'll never upgrade to Flickr Pro or pay for more storage at Box.net, for example. I don't mind seeing ads, but if they ever did start charging (and it sounds like there will always be a free version ), it is possible that I would either find a free alternative or just stick with the free version (as long as it still met my multi-protocol chatting needs). xgravity23 08/16/2008

It's nice, but in the shadow of Pidgin (OSS), I don't know what it really offers that's fresh.

You could start by looking at the feature list bugmenot 08/15/2008
Well, according to the Pidgin website, they don't support facebook messenger for one. That and I don't see Pidgin saying anything about email checking, or facebook/myspace notification and wallfeed integration. So of course, Digsby offers nothing fresh....rtfm next time... jakepease1 08/15/2008
lol, fanboys. drmanhattan 08/15/2008
