Description:The SAND chipset provides a complete solution for switching fabric and traffic management. The chipset enables system vendors and OEMs to build flexibly-sized platforms which provide 10Gbps to 80Tbps total user bandwidth.

The SAND chipset includes two types of devices: The Fabric Access Processors (FAPs) and Fabric Elements (FEs).

Fabric Access Processor (FAP)
FAPs represent a family of devices, which combine the functionality of a traditional stand-alone traffic manager and a Fabric Interface Device. In a system they implement a distributed traffic management architecture which can scale while maintaining functionality and performance.

FAP devices perform ingress and egress functions (scheduling and routing) to and from the switching fabric, in addition to providing complete traffic management functionality (shaping and queuing).

Dune Networks has so far introduced three FAP devices. The FAP10M (98FX930), supporting full-duplex 10Gbps user bandwidth and a proprietary interface to the Marvell Prestera Packet Processor. This device is marketed by Marvell as 98FX930. FAP10M is tailored for enterprise applications. The FAP10V, FAP20V, FAP11V and FAP21V devices, which are full-duplex 10Gbps and 20Gbps devices with SPI4.2 interface(s) towards the Network/Packet Processor complex. The Metro and Carrier markets are addressed with FAP10V, FAP20V, FAP11V and FAP21V, which are all tailored to provide true triple-play scheduling by supporting fully programmable scheduling hierarchy, single and dual bucket shaping (CIR/CBS and EIR/EBS) at every level in the hierarchy, as well as system aware WRED.

Fabric Element (FE)
The FE200 is a self-routing switching element integrating 64 x 3.125Gbps serial links. The FE200 is used to build a single-stage or a folded three-stage CLOS switching fabric.

Properties of a SAND Fabric:
Key innovations of the SAND fabric are its scalability, its customizable traffic management and its carrier class reliability and fault-tolerance.

Scalability
The same system may contain ports running at a few Mbps and also ports that run at 10G now and 40Gbps (OC768c) or more (100GE) in the future. Independently, the solution can scale in the number of ports, as a system may start with only few ports, and later grow to tens, hundreds, and literally thousands of ports.

Integrated Traffic Management
At the service level, SAND is a “scheduled-fabric” providing deep-buffering capabilities as well as fine-grained shaping and hierarchical scheduling. It enables the realization of systems with various levels of complexity and customized performance for particular market segments. For example, a high-end Enterprise Switch may be configured to support a number of classes of traffic per port, with distinct categories for VoIP and Video, while an Access or Metro solution will be configured to support the flow-based service level scheduling, shaping and tunneling requirements.

Reliability & Fault Tolerance
The SAND fabric implements carrier-class reliability, and incorporates failover mechanisms in hardware, which enable the creation of systems with various levels of fault-tolerance. Examples of systems that can be built include N+M, N-M and 1:1.
