Launched in 2005 as Tech.Memeorandum.com, the site that is considered by many as the blogosphere’s daily tech newspaper was later renamed TechMeme (pronounced "tech-meam"). Stories often hit TechMeme days before the New York Times and other newspapers cover them.
The site works by constantly checking blogs and other news sites to create a page full of the current most popular tech news links. It’s sister sites Memeorandum (politics), WeSmirch (celebrity gossip) and BallBug (baseball news) all work the same way.
TechMeme has no staff (besides founder Gabe Rivera) and no outside investors. TechMeme.com is registered under the Epivoz Corporation, a possible clue as to the future of Gabe’s sites.«Less

| Description: | TechMeme works by constantly checking blogs and other news sites to create a page full of the current most popular tech news links. The list of sites TechMeme monitors is constructed automatically and changes in real time based on linking. A small "seeding" list, constructed by creator Gabe Rivera, is used to help the system build the complete list. Stories are placed based on their importance. Importance depends on a number of factors, including links and how old the story is. The higher the importance, the higher the link will be on the site. TechMeme River is a page showing TechMeme headlines in reverse chronological order. The sites does have clearly marked sponsored posts. The technology behind the ads is unique. “A sponsor's blog feed is polled every few minutes, the latest post of which appears in its assigned slot (first, second, or third) along with a logo image that links to the sponsor's site.” |
