Key People
Management
Michael Tanne, Founder & CEO
Michael has been involved with building search engines for a long time, starting at Verity where he directed product management. He started Wink in 2005, compelled by a belief that people could provide valuable input that would make search better. Prior to Wink, Michael was CEO of X-Degrees, and was a founder of AdForce (IPO 1999) which was ultimately sold to CMGI. Michael serves on the Board of Cloudmark, a leading provider of anti-spam solutions. He is a Founder and Board Member of Full Circle Fund, a Bay Area non-profit that engages emerging business leaders in philanthropy through grants and hands-on assistance to promising organizations. Michael holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alberta and an MBA from Stanford University. Michael keeps the team motivated and cranking with his zeal for social search, and copious amounts of Red Bull and other highly caffeinated energy drinks.
Bruce Karsh, Principal Engineer
Bruce is the lead for the Wink core search team and is responsible for periodically reminding us that building a search engine is not a trival task. We wouldn't normally notice since Bruce and team are so heads down on building out the next generation of search that they make it look easy. Fortunately for Wink, Bruce has done this before, first at Inktomi and most recently as part of the Yahoo! Search team. Bruce led several search projects while at Inktomi, the most recent of which was the search toolkit where he developed the overall architecture, designed and wrote the incremental indexing system, and managed the software development team.
After Inktomi was acquired by Yahoo!, Bruce helped with the transition and launch of Yahoo! Search using Inktomi, managed the development of the page cache system, and managed the development and internationalization of the search result abstracts. Earlier, Bruce spent 10 years at SGI where he developed digital media software, and the user interface software for the SGI desktop. Bruce holds an BA in Mathematics from the University of Madison Wisconsin and is the author of 7 patents that are pending or awarded.
David Koblas, Principal Engineer
David leads the front-end engineering efforts for the Wink website. For the last ten years, David has been involved in delivering numerous high-profile consumer experiences, including running engineering for the Yahoo! Mail and PIM products, the first full-time employee and Principal Engineer at MailFrontier, and as Director of Engineering at Excite@Home running a number of the Excite portal products. He pioneered work in some of the original HTML authoring tools at companies such as Adobe and SGI.
Prior to the Internet, David was involved in projects ranging from the Virtual Planetary Exploration system for the Research Institute for Advanced Computer Science to constructing a streaming video system for the Norwegian National Library. When David isn't cranking out new features for Wink, he's hanging out with his family, or can be found running the trails or cycling the roads of Silicon Valley.
