Cory Billington
A supply chain industry pioneer, Corey Billington is a widely known supply chain domain expert and innovator, both in industry and academia. In the early 1980s, before the term "supply chain" became common vernacular, Billington was inventing techniques for supply chain improvement and predicting the widespread trend toward increasing profit margins through effective supply chain management.
In the late 1980s, Hewlett-Packard faced inventory levels mounting into the billions along with increasing demands for better customer service. Billington spent 15 years at HP in strategic planning and supply chain management roles, rising to Vice President of Supply Chain Services, where he was responsible for HP's corporate procurement and the company's $2 billion e-supply chain activities. He and his team developed a framework for modeling the uncertainties that degrade supply chain performance. These techniques allowed HP to vastly increase the efficiency and profitability of the printer and computer lines of business. Also, Billington and his group pioneered methods, such as buy-sell programs, to safeguard HP's outsourced supply chains and to significantly reduce corporate tax rates. The innovation of these methodologies was noted by Purchasing Magazine, which awarded HP its Medal of Excellence.
In the academic world, Billington is a Consulting Associate Professor at Stanford University's Engineering School, where since 1987 he has been teaching computer simulation, inventory theory, operations management, and supply chain management to MBA, MS and IE candidates as well as industry executives. He also guest lectures at the business schools of Arizona State, MIT, Northwestern, and Santa Clara University.
Billington earned BS degrees from both Claremont McKenna College and Stanford University, and then went on to pursue an MS and PhD at Stanford in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management. He is the author or contributor to scores of strategic supply chain research papers and other publications as well as a frequent conference presenter.
